first kiss (2000)

First Kiss is one of my older pieces. This is the first version of the piece.
I have since recreated the piece, with an all bronze base, that I am much happier with, but I need to finish that up, and shoot some photos.
The sculpture portrays a very young humpback whale calf, swimming languidly up to a woman, and letting her kiss him on the nose.
The piece was inspired by a story I heard a few years ago. A friend of mine had been spending some time in Baja California.
Humpback whales often winter there, and birth their calves.
The people there had started to notice that some of the cows were teaching their calves new tricks.
They would coax their young up to boats full of humans, and sort of "introduce" their calves to the humans.
Humpback whales are an exceptionally intelligent species, with long evolved cultures, complex language, and social structures.
I can't help but wonder what we look like to them, and what their experience feels like, from the other side of the waves.
